Tutorial : Programming the Cloud

Abstract: A tutorial with hands on deep dive programming illustrations on leading cloud platforms - Microsoft Azure, Hadoop
COMPUTE 2010 announces a one-day Tutorial Workshop on Cloud Programming – A series of Deep Dive Cloud Programming Sessions bringing together dominant public cloud offerings – Open Source Hadoop; Microsoft Azure. These sessions will be delivered by eminent practitioners and speakers who will illustrate the cloud programming with a hands-on programming and demo. The largest democracy that India is, we in ACM Compute, pose the common problem of creating, managing and using a citizen’s electoral system as the common problem for each of these Cloud Programming Deep Dive Sessions. The key solution they will illustrate is the (a) the ease of enrolling citizen voter – augmenting the database with right information (b) during elections – accessing it for casting the vote (c) prevent fraudulent updates as well as usage (d) conflict resolutions between various entries (e) usage of this information is so many validation contexts (f) analytics generation and support. They will illustrate how robust the system is, how frauds could be prevented by design, how scalability helps out and most importantly how very insignificant it will cost. The format for each session would be: 30 minutes of big picture introduction the Cloud offering; 30 minute problem statement, architecture, analysis, design, code and demo and finally a 15 minute of troubleshooting FAQs and other best practices sharing. In addition, they might also take up other illustrative code demonstrations centered around or associated with this problem.

9.45 AM - 6 pm, Trinity I, 23rd Jan Abstract: ACM COMPUTE 2010 announces a one-day Tutorial Workshop on Rich Internet Applications / Social Networking Applications

The first part will be a 4 hour tutorial on building Rich Internet Applications. This tutorial will cover the following topics:
1. An overview of various RIA platforms.
2. A deep dive into building RIAs with Adobe Flex 3 and 4
3. A look into some advanced features and capabilities of Flex and the Flash Platform 4. Some tips and tricks from a practitioner's handbook Prerequisites: The tutorial will assume some familiarity with building web applications

About the Speaker:

Mrinal Wadhwa is a Rich Internet Applications Consultant who's currently bootstrapping his startup called Blu, He has extensive experience in building Rich Internet Applications, is an active member of the Flex Community and has been recognized as an Adobe Flex Community Champion and an SAP Mentor.


The second part is a one and half hour tutorial on building Social Networking apps. This tutorial covers the following topics.
1. What is Facebook Connect and what are the benefits of using it.
2. A simple application for logging into a site using FB Connect, perform an activity and post a news feed on Facebook
3. Advanced capabilities of Facebook Connect (ex. sending email to the user)
4. Integrating with your login/signup mechanism 5. A note on the terms and policies of FB Connect
Prerequisites: The tutorial will assume familiarity with Facebook platform and working knowledge of Ruby

About the Speaker:

Prateek Dayal is a an entrepreneur and a technologist. He runs the popular music-sharing site Muziboo which enables people to record and share their music online. He has build an award winning app for Muziboo in the Facebook Developer challenge.

Abstract Part one of the talk will have an introduction to Nokia platforms (WRT, Java, etc), followed by covereage of the S60 WRT platform and concluding with a walk through of a simple widget implementation .
Part two will cover introduction to Opera platform, and walkthrough a widget implementation in Opera.
